Ashwaubenon, Wisconsin – Freshman standout Emma Simon provided all the scoring for the Bulldogs Friday night in Adrian College’s 2-1 overtime win vs. St. Norbert College in NCAA Women’s Hockey action.
After a scoreless first period, and most of the second, Simon buried a shot past the SNC goalie on a pass from senior Zoe Lohrei 12:06 into the period. The Green Knights answered the Bulldog goal 6:19 later to tie the score. The rest of the regulation was a defensive battle, with both goaltenders putting on a show for the Friday night crowd.
The two top teams in the Northern Collegiate Hockey Assocation went to a sudden-victory 3-on-three overtime period to decide which team would earn the extra point in the league standings. After near-misses by both teams in overtime, a SNC skater sent a shot high of the Adrian College goal. The lively bounce off of the glass sent the puck towards Riley Johnson. The junior was able to muscle the puck up the ice to a streaking Simon. She settled a rolling puck and beat Keira Markell for the game-winner at 2:21 into overtime.
Adrian goalie Annie Gilbert earned the victory, finishing the game with 23 saves. Markell ended with 33 saves in the loss. The win improves AC’s record to 17-2-1 (12-0-1 NCHA) and drops SNC to 16-4-0 (12-1-0 NCHA). Both teams are tied at the top of the league now, with 37 points each.
The DS Johnson and Assocaites Service First Insurance Group Three Stars of the game were:
- Emma Simon (2 goals)
- Annie Gilbert (23 saves, 1 goal against)
- Annika Hanson
Both teams will be back this afternoon for game two of the weekend series at 4pm EST with Ian Wendt on the call for 96.5fm The Cave and 965thecave.com.
