Ann Arbor, MI – The Siena Heights women’s and men’s basketball teams split their doubleheader at Concordia University (MI) Wednesday night. Both games were decided by less than 5 points. Both games were broadcast by Patt Hayes and Fred Smith on 96.5fm The Cave and 965thecave.com.
Lady Saints hang on vs. Cardinals…
The Siena Heights women’s basketball team outlasted Concordia for a 66-63 WHAC victory on Wednesday.
Brooke Rebman led the Saints in scoring with 15 points. Kanyla Tyler added 13 points, including the go-ahead bucket, and Jam Thigpen contributed 12.
E’Anna Won totaled five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block.
Tyler gave SHU a 63-61 lead with 1:56 left in the fourth quarter. She also scored the game’s final points, depositing a pair of free throws before the Saints held CUAA 0-for-6 from the field in the final 30 seconds.
The close contest featured seven lead changes. Concordia’s biggest lead was 12-9 late in the first quarter; SHU’s was 44-34 in the third. CU drops to 5-9, 4-4 WHAC after the loss.
Siena Heights (9-7, 6-2) will play next when it hosts Cornerstone on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Kalatzis Strong Showing Not Enough In Tight Road Loss…
The Siena Heights men’s basketball team fell to WHAC conference opponent Concordia, 65-61 on Wednesday.
George Kalatzis led the Saints in scoring, recording a season-high 29 points, going 11-12 from the floor and 5-6 from behind the three-point line. Brent Wiles added nine rebounds.
SHU 5-11 (2-6) fell behind early 14-2 until George Kalatzis caught fire as he scored 16 first-half points, going 7-8 from the floor and 2-3 from behind the arc in the first half to put the Saints up three at halftime 27-24.
The second half featured back-and-forth action between SHU and Concordia (5-9, 2-6 WHAC), featuring big scoring runs on both sides. The first run came from Concordia when they went on a 16-0 scoring run in a span of 2:48 to take a 51-41 lead with 8:05 remaining in the game. Immediately after Concordia’s run, SHU went on a scoring run of their own as they went on a 14-1 run in 4:10 to regain the lead 55-52. In the remaining minutes, Concordia went on one last spurt to close the game out and ultimately win 65-61.
On the evening, the Saints shot 37.9% from the floor and 25.0% from behind the three-point line. On the glass, the Saints held a 39-31 advantage.
The Saints will return to action on Saturday, Jan. 11, with a 1:00 p.m. EST game at home vs WHAC conference opponent, Cornerstone.
