Adrian, MI – The Siena Heights women’s basketball team survived an upset bid and advanced to the semifinal round of the WHAC Tournament with a 61-45 quarterfinal win over Lawrence Tech on Wednesday at the SHU Fieldhouse.
Kayla Hinton led the way for the Saints (26-3) with 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals while Jakarri Alven finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. E’Moni Guice-Finch had 11 points off the bench. E’Anna Won grabbed nine rebounds and Olivia DeLong totaled nine points and two blocks.
SHU overcame a slow start after falling behind 4-0 and did not convert a field goal until 3:45 into the contest when Guice-Finch buried a 3-pointer.
Guice-Finch’s 3-ball was the beginning of a 13-1 stretch for the Saints, which they bridged across the first and second quarters. That led Siena Heights to a 15-7 lead, and SHU never trailed the rest of the way.
The Saints led 28-23 at halftime, but LTU (12-17) never went away until a decisive run in the fourth.
Leading 45-43, the Saints outscored the Blue Devils, 16-2, through the end of the game. DeLong had seven points in that stretch, Hinton added six and Vice buried a 3 as the shot clock was expiring.
SHU will play in the Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals when Concordia visits the SHU Fieldhouse on Friday. Top-seeded Indiana Tech will play Cornerstone in the other semifinal game.
