Adrian College NCAA Hockey Teams Sweep Toledo Trip

Toledo, OH – The Adrian College Women’s and Men’s NCAA hockey teams travelled to Toledo, Ohio Saturday for exhibition games at the Huntington Center… home of the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye. The Bulldogs outscored their opponents 7-1 on the day!

On the Women’s side…

The No. 6/5 Adrian College Women’s NCAA Hockey team battled with Trine University, coming out on top with a 6-1 win.

The Bulldogs opened the scoring in the first period on an unassisted goal from captain Karmen Anderson. The Bulldogs then added one more with 0.1 seconds to go in the opening frame, this time on a point shot from Annika Hanson.

The Bulldogs would add three more in the second period thanks to Courtney Ben, Tia Lascelle, and Aileena Dopheide. Trine would score their lone goal in the second period as well.

Third period action saw Adrian tack on one more goal from Callie Wollschlager, closing out the 6-1 victory. Dopheide, Lascelle, and Wollschlager each added an assist in the contest. Goaltender Michaela O’Brien made eleven saves in her fourth win of the season. Shots on goal in the game ended 73-12 in Adrian’s favor.

The NCAA Women’s Hockey team will be back in action on January 12-13 when they host Lawrence University at the Arrington Ice Arena for a NCHA series match-up.

On the Men’s side…

The No. 4/6 Adrian College NCAA men’s hockey team hosted the Aurora University Spartans in a non-conference game. The Bulldogs were successful on defense and took advantage of an early first period goal to come away with a 1-0 victory.

The Bulldogs got on the board in the first period on a goal from Bradley Somers that was assisted by Mathew Rehding and Matt Couto. At the end of the period, Aurora was handed a 5-minute penalty to put the Bulldogs on the power play. The second period went scoreless taking a 1-0 Adrian lead into the third period. After two periods of play, the Bulldogs led 31-18 in shots on goal.

The defense continued to hold strong for Adrian in the third. Aurora totaled 13 shots on goal in the final period, but remained scoreless. Adrian was successful on the penalty kill as they killed off three third period penalties. The Bulldogs outshot the Spartans 40-31 on the afternoon.

Dershahn Stewart picked up the shutout in goal, while recording 31 saves.

Adrian will hit the road next weekend as they return to NCHA conference play with a two-game series at Lawrence University. The series will begin on Friday, January 12 at 8:00 PM EST.
