Adrian, MI – These are the Lenawee County stories from Tuesday’s Inside the Cave Sports Update…

The Morenci Bulldogs girls basketball team was victorious at home over the Hudson Tigers, 62-36.

Emersyn Bachelder led Morenci with 25 points and 9 rebounds. Colbie Ekins had a double-double, with 24 points and 17 rebounds.

Sam Anderson and Macayle Grayer each led the way for Hudson with 11 points. Grayer also added 5 rebounds. Taylor Kopin contributed 10 points for the Tigers.

Morenci will host Britton-Deerfield on Wednesday. Hudson will travel to Clinton on Thursday. Hudson vs. Clinton will be aired on Lenawee TV and 96.5 The Cave.

The Onsted Wildcats girls basketball team picked up a 61-38 win over Erie-Mason on Monday night.

Hannah Hill led Onsted with 17 points and 9 steals. Kayla Gerken and Karlie Kimerer each had 14 points.

Sand Creek girls basketball lost to Fayette on Monday, 52-24.

The Britton-Deerfield Patriots girls basketball team fell to Manchester Monday night, 42-24. Dotson led BD with 14 points.

Whiteford boys topped Lenawee Christian in a battle of two top Tri-County Conference teams, 69-61. Jaxon Salenbien paced the Cougars with 38 points.

High school basketball is back on 96.5 The Cave and Lenawee TV tonight, as the Lenawee Christian girls basketball team travels to Blissfield to battle the Royals. Tip off at 6pm with John Koehn and Joe Johns on the call.

Lenawee United hockey team traveled to Mike Modano Ice Arena on Monday evening to compete against New Boston United in a non-league match-up…winning the high-scoring affair 15-7.

Lenawee United players scoring multiple goals were: Cameron Mahony…five goals, Briggs Kern…four goals, and Zeke Smart with two goals. Colton Nicolai got the start in net for LU.

Lenawee United will next play on Wednesday against Chelsea and Saturday against Jackson United… in Chelsea.

Blissfield’s Hope Miller has been selected to receive a Michigan High School Athletic Association Class ‘C’ scholarship through the MHSAA/Farm Bureau Insurance Scholar-Athlete Award program.

Students applying for the Scholar-Athlete Award must be carrying at least a 3.5 grade-point average and have previously won a letter in a varsity sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a postseason tournament.

Miller earned all-state in cross country three times and set school record in that sport, earned all-state two seasons in track and set school records in two races, and earned all-league in soccer.

She is participating in her second year of National Honor Society and as secretary, fourth on student council and as vice president, and third on Lenawee Youth Council.

Another local student-athlete, Drew Ruddy from Ottawa Lake Whiteford, was named a recipient of the scholarship.

They will be recognized March 14th during the Boys Basketball Finals at the Breslin Student Events Center in East Lansing.

The Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association announced its Athletes of the Week on Monday afternoon, with Adrian College men’s wrestling standout Aiden Smith earning MIAA Wrestler of the Week honors.

Smith turned in a dominant performance after moving up a weight class to 165, defeating Albion’s Peyton Brooks by a 21–4 technical fall. Brooks entered the matchup ranked number one in the region and number 15 nationally, but Smith controlled the bout from start to finish to secure the victory.

The honor marks the third time this season Smith has been named MIAA Wrestler of the Week and the fourth time overall this year that an Adrian College wrestler has received the distinction.

The USCHO and D3HockeyNews released their weekly polls for NCAA Division 3 women’s hockey on Monday afternoon.

The Adrian College women’s hockey team is ranked ninth in the USCHO poll and eighth in the D3HockeyNews poll.

The Bulldogs are coming off a weekend sweep of St. Norbert College, earning victories of 2–1 and 5–1. Adrian improves to 17-4 overall and remains perfect in NCHA play at 14-0.

Fellow NCHA opponent Concordia Wisconsin is the only other conference team ranked in the top 15, checking in at 13 with a 19-1-1 record on the season.

Adrian and Concordia Wisconsin will meet in a two-game road series Friday and Saturday. The games will be broadcast on 96.5 the Cave.

The Adrian College NCAA men’s hockey team climbed two spots in the latest national polls released by USCHO and D3HockeyNews, moving up to number fourth in both NCAA Division 3 men’s hockey rankings.

The first star of the weekend for the Adrian College was their goalie…Ryan Piros. He did not allow an even strength goal in two games, while allowing just three power play goals during that stretch.

Piros made 35 saves on 36 shots in AC’s 4-1 win on Friday, and stopped 33 of 35 St. Norbert shots in Adrian’s shootout victory on Saturday. Head coach Adam Phillips gathered his thoughts on his goalie’s performance after Saturday’s dramatic win…

 

The Bulldogs will play Concordia University – Wisconsin this weekend at home.
