Adrian, MI – Here are the local highlights from Tuesday’s Inside the Cave Sports Update…

The Morenci Boys basketball team will have multiple players with plenty of varsity experience under their belts heading into the 2025-26 season.

Here is third year head coach of the Bulldogs, Garrett Benjamin, who was on the boys basketball preview show this weekend…

 

Coach Benjamin talked about how the experience for some of his players has helped in practice…

 

The Bulldogs begin their season with four road games, starting December 2nd at Waldron. Morenci’s home opener will be the 15th versus Reading.

Alexus Shaneyfelt had a runner-up finish to lead the Siena Heights women’s wrestling team as five wrestlers placed at the Albion Open over the weekend.

Shaneyfelt won four straight matches before falling in the 145-pound championship match.

Phoenix Waters won four matches to take eighth place at 160. Neveah Wendt had three victories, taking a fall and tech fall at 124 for fifth place.

The Saints had two place-winners at 138: sixth-place Athena Calderon and eighth-place Cadence Wallace.

Jesus Aquino-Morales won four matches in the 149-pound freshman/sophomore class and Randy Frailey went 2-2 in the open 133-pound weight class as the Siena Heights men’s wrestling team competed at the Grand View Open this past weekend.

Ty Biggart, Maurice Ames, Benicio Torres, and Grant Richardson had three wins on the mat each.

The Adrian College women’s bowling team made the trip to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the third AHBA tournament.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was Victoria McLaughlin, who delivered a sixth-place individual finish. Alina Wilgus followed with a solid showing of her own, placing 19th.

The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday, where they will compete in the Falcon Classic.

All-Region honorees for the 2025 NCAA Division III Cross Country season were announced Monday by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, following Saturday’s Regional Championships.

Athletes earned All-Region recognition by placing inside the top 35 at one of the ten regional sites.

Adrian College’s Will Houvener earned All-Region honors for his strong performance at the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Regional, finishing 30th. He leaves an impressive legacy as a three-time All-MIAA honoree, Adrian’s 8,000-meter record holder, a two-time All-Region selection, and the program’s record holder in both the indoor 3,000 meters and outdoor 5,000 meters.

Houvener and the rest of the cross country team are gearing up for a packed indoor track and field season.

The Adrian College NCAA women’s hockey team climbed in the national rankings this week, checking in at No. 10 in the USCHO.com Poll and No. 9 in the D3HockeyNews Poll.

The Bulldogs sit at 4-2-0 on the season after picking up a two-game sweep over Aurora University.

Fellow NCHA member St. Norbert fell in both national polls, landing at No. 8 in both rankings.

The Bulldogs return to action this weekend with a road trip to Lawrence University for a two-game NCHA series. Game one is scheduled for Friday at 3PM.

The Adrian College NCAA men’s hockey team dropped a couple of spots in the Week 3 National Polls. Now 4-2-0 on the season, the Bulldogs come in at No. 4 in both the USCHO and D3HockeyNews rankings.

Adrian is coming off a tough weekend at Aurora University, where they fell 6-4 on Friday and 1-0 in overtime on Saturday.

Aurora climbed to No. 2 in both national polls this week and is receiving a first-place vote in the USCHO rankings. St. Norbert moved into the No. 3 position, while Trine stands at No. 11 in the USCHO Poll and No. 10 in the D3HockeyNews Poll.

The Bulldogs return home this weekend for their long-awaited home opener, hosting Lawrence University on November Friday and Saturday. The series begins Friday at 7 PM.
