Miami Dolphins defensive back Ashtyn Davis faced a setback in his bid to become the Dolphins’ starting safety this season after sustaining a lower leg injury during Tuesday’s practice.

A headline on Sports Illustrated’s website have the Dolphins calling it an “ominous-looking injury”, but there was no official report from the team on Davis’ prognosis.

According to NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe, “Dolphins safety Ashtyn Davis went down with an apparent lower leg injury in team drills. He limped inside the team facility after a few mins. Davis punched the ground in frustration after falling down. HC Mike McDaniel and a few teammates went over to talk to him on sidelines.”

Wolfe later updated that “Ashtyn Davis is back on sidelines with crutches & a boot on his left foot/lower leg. Miami’s bad luck with training camp secondary injuries continues”

Davis came joined the Cal football program as a walk-on in 2015 after being a standout hurdler on the Cal track team in 2014.  He played his first five NFL seasons with the New York Jets, and signed a one-year, $2.5 million free-agent contract with the Dolphins in March.

Davis has started 22 games in his NFL career and has eight career interceptions. Last season for the Jets, he played in 15 games, making just one start. Davis’ best season was 2021 when he started 10 games, recorded two interceptions, made 62 tackles and forced three fumbles. He finished the 2024 season with 35 tackles and two interceptions.
